URGENT HELP IS NEEDED IN LOCATING MICROSAT COMPONENTS
HR IS AMSAT NEWS SERVICE BULLETIN 182.01 FROM AMSAT HQ
SILVER SPRING, MD JULY 1,1989
TO ALL RADIO AMATEURS BT
Urgent Help Is Needed In Locating Microsat Components
AMSAT-NA President Doug Loughmiller (KO5I), on behalf of the
Microsat construction team, is appealing to the amateur
community for help in locating some vitally important
components to be used in the construction of the four
Microsat satellites now under development for a launch later
this year.
The construction phase of the spacecraft sub-systems is
drawing to a close in preparation for spacecraft integration
now scheduled to commence in the next couple of weeks.
AMSAT has exhausted all known sources for these components.
The Microsat construction team is operating under a very
tight time table and if this project is to be completed on
schedule, it is absolutely imperative that the needed
components be located and delivered to AMSAT by the end of
this week.
The components that are urgently needed include two surface
mount integrated circuits and a transistor all for use in the
flight computer. They are as follows:
QUANTITY DEVICE
-------- ------
10 CD74AC00M
10 CD74AC04M
10 2N7024
If you can provide some assistance in locating these very
important components, please contact AMSAT Assistant Vice
President of Engineering, Bob McGwier (N4HY) at (609) 443-
8963 or AMSAT President Doug Loughmiller (KO5I) at (214) 784-
0194. Any help in this matter will be greatly appreciated.

TO ALL RADIO AMATEURS BT
AMSAT-NA Board-of-Directors Nominations Period Extended to July 14, 1989
AMSAT-NA Headquarters wants to remind members that nominations for the office
of Director are now in order. According to the AMSAT-NA Bylaws (see ASR
#187), four out of the seven Board-of-Director (BOD) seats will be up for
election this year. The seats on the "Board" which are up for election this
year are currently filled by the following individuals:
1) Bill Tynan (W3XO)
2) Jan King (W3GEY)
3) Bob McGwier (N4HY)
4) Andy MacAllister (WA5ZIB)
Each Director will serve for a two year term. Any five AMSAT-NA members or
any Member Society can nominate a member (who shall have agreed to serve if
elected) for a seat on the Board. Nominees will be asked to provide minimal
background and biographical data for publication in Amateur Satellite Report
(ASR) and for inclusion with the ballot. Please send your nominating
petitions to:
Secretary
Radio Amateur Satellite Corporation
c/o AMSAT-NA HQ
Suite #600
850 Sligo Avenue
Silver Spring, MD
20910
In accordance with the Bylaws, the deadline for receipt of nominating
petitions by the Secretary has been extended from July 7 to July 14, 1989,
rather than July 30 as erroneously stated in the ANS bulletin dated June 24.
We regret the error.

W2PN BECOMES A SILENT KEY
HR AMSAT NEWS SERVICE BULLETIN 182.03 FROM AMSAT HQ
SILVER SPRING, MD JULY 01, 1989
TO ALL RADIO AMATEURS BT
Long Time OSCAR Enthusiast, Nat Schnoll (W2PN), Becomes A Silent Key
AMSAT-NA officials this week learned of the passing of a long-time AMSAT
member and OSCAR enthusiast, Nat Schnoll (W2PN) of Upper Saddle River, NJ.
Nat had been very active with all the OSCARS since the OSCAR 6 days. During
that time, Nat made many substantial financial contributions to the Phase III
Program. In his professional life, Nat was a successful engineer and
industrialist. After retiring in the late 1960's and despite being in his
80's, he remained very active in amateur radio as a noted DXer and he was
also an avid traveller, visiting all of the DXCC countries in which he had
made contacts with. The only country in which he had visited but had never
worked an amateur radio station there was Burma. That was the last country
he need in order for him to have said that he "worked them all." Everyone who
knew Nat regarded him as real gentleman. AMSAT and the Amateur Radio
community will certainly miss him.

RS 12/13 LAUNCH DELAYED
HR AMSAT NEWS SERVICE BULLETIN 182.04 FROM AMSAT HQ
SILVER SPRING, MD JULY 01, 1989
TO ALL RADIO AMATEURS BT
Sources Indicate That The RS 12/13 Launch Will Be Delayed
As reported in the AMSAT News Service (ANS) Bulletins several weeks ago, the
amateur satellite community had expected the imminent launch of RS 12/13.
That report was based upon the best available information at the time.
However, AMSAT-NA has learned from various reliable sources (including G3AAJ
and KC2CF) this week that the launch of RS 12/13 has been delayed.
Like its sister RS 10/11, RS 12/13 will fly piggy-back on a civilian
navigational satellite. This series of navigational satellites also perform a
secondary mission known as COSPAS/SARSAT: search-and-rescue. As part of
their secondary mission, these satellites collect doppler-shift data, for
example, from downed airplanes which have their Emergency Locator Trans-
mitters (ELT) running. This data is then used to "geo-locate" their position.
These were the same series of satellites which helped locate the SKI TREKKERS
during their journey from the Soviet Union to the North Pole and Canada last
year. It is felt that the launch of RS 12/13 will not happen until there is a
failure of one of the operational on-orbit COSPAS/SARSATs; when that occurs,
RS 12/13 will then be launched. At this point it difficult to say when such a
failure will occur. As soon as AMSAT receives any further information about
the launch of RS 12/13, it will be made available as soon as possible in ANS
Bulletins.

SPACE SYMPOSIUM DATE CHANGED
HR AMSAT NEWS SERVICE BULLETIN 182.05 FROM AMSAT HQ
SILVER SPRING, MD JULY 01, 1989
TO ALL RADIO AMATEURS BT
AMSAT-NA Officials Move Space Symposium To Weekend Of November 3-5th
At the present time, the launch of the MICROSATs is scheduled for November 9,
1989. Since this falls within two days of the scheduled AMSAT-NA
Space Symposium, AMSAT-NA officials have decided to change the date of this
annual AMSAT event to the weekend of November 3rd, 4th, and 5th. Those who
have attended the Space Symposium in years past know that it is usually held
on the second weekend of November. However, since many of the key personnel
for the MICROSAT Program will be delivering papers at the Space Symposium, it
was felt that it would be impossible for them to also provide support for the
MICROSATs which would have been launched only 48 hours before the start
of the Symposium! Therefore, in recognizing this critical conflict between
the launch and the Space Symposium, AMSAT officials have decided to move the
Space Symposium ONE WEEK AHEAD to November 3-5th. Everything else will remain
the same: the location will still be in Des Moines, IA, registration will
be on Friday, seminars will held on Saturday, the Annual AMSAT-NA Banquet will
be Saturday evening, and the Board of Directors meeting will be on Sunday.
With the launch of the MICROSATs and UOSAT D & E, there will be many papers
devoted to various aspects of these new OSCAR satellites. If you would like
to obtain more information about the AMSAT-NA Space Symposium, please contact
AMSAT-NA HQ at (301) 589-6062 or Ralph Wallio (W0RPK) at (515) 961-6406.

SILVER SPRING, MD JULY 01, 1989
TO ALL RADIO AMATEURS BT
N5BF Issues A New Schedule For The AMSAT Operations Net For AO-13
Courtney Duncan (N5BF), Manager of the AMSAT Operations Net, has issued the
following new schedule for the next several months for the times and
frequencies of the OPS Net. These nets on AO-13 are designed to discuss the
many happenings in the world of Amateur Radio Satellites. Please note that
N5BF has adopted a new policy on the scheduling of this Net. In previous
months the OPS Net was normally held on weekends mostly for convenience.
However, N5BF has designed this new schedule so that the Nets will occur in
the evenings from 00:00 to 03:00 UTC. Also, pointing angles was another
consideration in choosing these OPS Net times. It is hoped that this new
policy for scheduling the OPS net will allow more AO-13 users the opportunity
to check-in to this interesting net. If you have any comments or suggestions
to pass along to N5BF, you can leave them to COURTNEY DUNCAN on the AMSAT-NA
BBS at (301) 447-3003.
